The Cunca Wulang Canyon is a rocky creek with some high cascades and waterholes in a small valley surrounded by a rain forest about 30 km (a 60 minutes drive) east of Labuan Bajo. From the village Wersawe where we park our car it is still approximately a sixty minute walk through farmlands with paddy fields, vanilla, coffee, candle nut and cacao.
We pick you up from your hotel at your suggested time. For about twelve kilometers we travel along rice paddy fields and through tiny west-manggaraian villages before we reach the mountainside. The winding road leads us steeply uphill. It seems the loops are countless. On the way we will have marvelous views across the Komodo National Park and the the western end of Flores and with its scattered tiny islands in front of it. Finally we reach the starting point of our hike.
After we park our car under trees, we walk on a stone paved rough road through the village. Behind the village the road becomes a dirt road and slowly turns into a small path. You have to be in a good condition to hike this trail. The last part of the hike down to the valley through the tropical rainforest is very steep. When we reach the bottom of the valley with its rocky waterholes we are still not able to see the cascades. We have to climb a very steep loamy slope. Hold you only can find by grapping the bushes and the tree branches. There is no trail anymore. Please bring good hiking shoes and sandales.
The duration of the tour is about five to six hours
Itinerary subject to change withour prior notice
Transportation
We travel by an air conditioned car to the starting point of our tour.
Difficulty of the hike
From the starting point we walk on an stone paved road through a village. Afterwards we hike down a small and steep trail towards the canyon. It is a moderate hike. If you want to see the cascades, you have to climb a steep hillside.
We recommend to visit the Cunca Wulang Valley only in the dry season from April to November. During the rainy season the trail is very slippery and during late dry season there is not much water running through the rocky creek. The main attraction are the beautiful natural swimming pools. Fearless swimmers can enjoy jumping from the canyon walls to the water holes. Be sure to check the depth of the water holes before jumping and ask the local guide for the safest locations.
